All set for Malawi Sport Awards

The stage is set for the sixth edition of the Malawi Sport Awards at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi tonight.

The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) is expected to honour outstanding sports personalities in 14 categories.

But the focus of the night would be on the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, who are fighting for the best woman sports personality of the year accolade.

The two sisters had an incredible year at their respective clubs abroad.

Tabitha, who plays for French giants Olympique Lyonnais, had one of the best years in her football career, having been voted as the seventh best women’s footballer in the world and was ranked 16th in the Ballon d’Or.

On top of that, Tabitha won the 2024 French D1 Arkema League and also scooped the golden boot award with 19 goals and 11 assists while playing for Paris Saint Germaine on loan from Chinese side Wuhan Jiangda.

NOMINATED—Temwa

For Temwa, she also had a year to remember, having smashed several records in her debut season in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL).

The Kansas City Current striker was named as the Most Valuable Player in NWSL and became the first female player to win the golden boot award with 20 goals.

She also scored against all the 13 teams in the regular season.

The two sisters will not attend the ceremony, having returned to their respective bases after playing for the Scorchers against Zambia.

Meanwhile, chairperson for the organising committee, Limbani Matola, said all was set for the event.

“We are ready for the event. We hope the event will be the best ever,” Matola said.

In a related development, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Coach Peter Mponda, Malawi Under-21 National Netball Team Coach Christina Mkwanda and Malawi National Cricket Team Coach Gershom Mtambalika were nominated for the coach of the year award.

Several individuals were nominated in various categories.
