Vitumbiko Mumba calls for north support

By Bernard Mhone:

Trade and Industry Minister Vitumbiko Mumba has advised the corporate world not to be selective when implementing corporate social responsibility activities in the country.

Mumba made the remarks during the launch of the K75 million Engineer Vitumbiko Northern Region Netball League in Mzuzu City on Saturday.

He said despite having a lot of talented athletes, many companies shunned supporting the Northern Region.

“The Northern Region still lags behind in sports sponsorship. When I sponsored basketball, they said they had stayed for over 20 years without sponsorship.

“And netball today, they are saying the same thing. I am saying this unapologetically; the companies are selective. Why do they shun the north?” Mumba queried.

He said he had decided to sponsor the netball league following a proposal from Netball Association of Malawi (Nam).

Nam President Vitumbiko Gubuduza hailed Mumba for bankrolling the league, saying it would complement their strategic plan of rebuilding the national team to reclaim glory.

“It is an undeniable fact that the Northern Region contributes a lot of players to our national team but it was the only region which had no proper sponsorship. This league will help us unearth talent and feed national teams,” Gubuduza said.

The K75 million sponsorship is for three years, with each year being allocated K25 million.
