Trio lodge complaint over controversial NRFA polls

Three former officials of the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) have written the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Electoral Appeals Committee, asking it to nullify results of the body’s elective general meeting.

The meeting was held in Mzimba District on Saturday.

APPEALED—Mwasinga

The trio—namely Chauka Mwasinga, Desire Bellings and Ralph Kasilika— boycotted the polls over unresolved concerns they claim were sent to Fam before the elections.

Fam Executive Member Felistus Dowe, who was the returning officer, went ahead with the polls, having declared the three as absentees.

In a letter, which Times Sport has seen, the three have cited “electoral irregularities” as the reason they have sought the Fam Electoral Appeals Committee’s intervention on the issue.

“The NRFA constitution requires a 21-day notice period for an EGM, yet Fam, in its letter dated 24th February 2025, only provided five days’ notice to the elective general assembly on 1st March 2025.

“Further, the quorum for the General Assembly is 2/3 majority of the members entitled to vote. Each of the seven districts sends four delegates amounting to 28 delegates. Therefore, in order to constitute a quorum at least 18 delegates must be present,” the letter reads.

The three also say Dossi has to be penalised for allegedly flouting electoral procedures.

They say, for instance, that Dossi proceeded with the EGM without forming a quorum.

“Fam returning officer, counsel Felister Dossi, still went ahead with the elective AGM and conducted business of the day with only 16 of the 28 expected delegates.

“In view of the foregoing, we appeal for [the] intervention of your office and seek the following reliefs: Nullification of the elections that purportedly took place on 1st March 2025;

“Resolve the registered electoral irregularities and then conduct fresh elections in terms of [sic] the NFRA Constitution; Imposition of disciplinary sanctions against the Fam Returning Officer Ms Felister Dossi for flouting [provisions of] the NRFA Constitution,” the ex-officials say.

Dossi said she would wait for communication, from the association’s secretariat, on the matter.

Meanwhile, one of the country’s renowned football analysts, Thokozani Chimbali, has said the three complainants have a case to prove.

“In this case, if the required number of delegates was 28 and only 16 voted, then they did not make the quorum and this was against provisions of NRFA’s constitution; that is, in line with Article 24 of the association,” the former Silver Strikers chief executive officer said.
