Binwell Katinji returns with bang

Binwell Katinji returns with bang
WELL-BUILT— Katinji

Silver Strikers forward Binwell Katinji has opened a new chapter after returning to the Malawi National Football Team fold impressively, having last played for the Flames in 2018.

Katinji, alongside Moyale Barracks striker Emmanuel Allan, joined the Flames squad on Wednesday ahead of the African Nations Championship qualifier against Comoros, which was slated for last Sunday.

Despite having limited time in camp, the Central Bankers’ forward repaid coach Kalisto Pasuwa’s faith in him by scoring the opening goal in the 44th minute of the match.

Katinji headed home a cross from MacDonald Lameck, who exchanged passes with Gaddie Chirwa.

The forward said it was a dream return to the senior national team.

“I was delighted that I scored on my return to the Flames setup. I last played for the Flames in 2018, when we drew 0-0 with Morocco. I wanted to score and I did it. The goal has given me confidence,” Katinji said.

The Civil Service United former player said he was not surprised when he was given a late call-up.

“It is every footballer’s dream to play for the national team. When I was called into camp, I realised that it was my chance to rise again,” he said.

Katinji said he would not relax but work hard to remain in the team.

“My goal is to help the team reach the next round. As such, I have to work hard and follow instructions to remain in the team,” he said.

The 28-year-old attacker has played for Ferroviário de Lichinga (Mozambique), Malanti Chiefs (eSwatini), Civil and Silver on two spells.
