Tributes pour in for Yasin Osman

Malawi football legend Yasin ‘Njinga’ Osman died suddenly Monday, leaving the nation with fond memories of his exploits.

Osman, 75, died at Blantyre Adventist Hospital Monday.

He was rushed there after collapsing on Sunday.

Mighty Wanderers officials confirmed the heartrending news on the club’s official Facebook page.

“Mighty Wanderers Ltd deeply regrets to announce the sudden passing of its Technical Director, Mr Yasin Osman, who died on Monday, 21st April 2025, at Blantyre Adventist Hospital.

“Mr Osman was a dedicated and passionate member of our technical team whose contributions to the club were invaluable. His commitment, his professionalism and love for the game left a lasting impact on the team and the entire Wanderers family,” the statement reads.

Panganeni Ndovi

Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi said they were shocked with Osman’s death.

“He was a man who was crucial to our mission of making Mighty [Wanderers] mighty again,” he said.

Indeed, darkness has descended on the football fraternity following Osman’s death.

He was the first player on the domestic scene to attract a transfer fee when he left Wanderers to join Bata Bullets [now FCB Nyasa Big Bullets].

At that particular time, Bullets paid 100 Pounds to sign Osman, who was a thorn in defenders’ flesh.

Nicknamed Njinga or Teach, Osman walked in his elder brother Allaudin Osman’s footsteps by becoming one of the only four players to have played for both Nyasaland and Malawi.

At Bullets, Osman quickly established himself, scoring 42 goals in his first season.

He spent two seasons at Bullets before moving to Michiru Blue Cross for another record fee of K500.

During his fourth season with Michiru, Osman moved back to Wanderers for a K500 fee in August 1974.

Yasin ended his career at Wanderers in 1977 and started playing social football with Dodos.

On the international scene, Yasin played his first Flames match against Zambia on July 6, 1966.

His international career lasted for 10 years between 1966 and 1975.

According to unverified statistics, Osman played 68 matches for Malawi, including three matches as a substitute.

He then became coach and attended several courses both within and outside the country.

As a coach, Osman led a number of clubs including Michiru Blue Cross, Wanderers (on numerous separate occasions), Moneymen and Escom.

In 2017, Osman inspired Wanderers to their first league title in 11 years.

To underline that he was a complete football figure, Osman coached various national teams on several different occasions and served as Football Association of Malawi general secretary.

Peter Kanjere

Meanwhile, tributes keep flowing in for Osman.

“The Football Association of Malawi is deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Mighty Wanderers Technical Director Yasin Teach Osman. A former Flames player and coach, Osman died on Monday after a short illness. Osman served as Fam General Secretary on two occasions between 1996-1999 and 2005- 2007,” the national football body posted on its website.

Seasoned sports journalist Peter Kanjere said Osman was a legend.

“There are only 20 individuals worth being called local football legends and Yasin Osman easily tops that list. He was greatness in motion, a fluent scorer for club and country, an articulate coach and administrator,” he said..
