Lilongwe Government Data Centre, currently in its final construction phase, is scheduled for commissioning in May 2025, Principal Secretary for e-Government Stephen Mjuweni has said.
Mjuweni said construction works were nearly complete, with commissioning planned for May followed by an official launch some two weeks later.
The state-of-the-art facility will centralise government data management, hosting all public information systems including employment records for over 250,000 government workers.
“The finishing touches are underway. The facility is in the final stages of construction. We are talking about integrating all critical systems and hosting all data under one roof at the National Data Centre. It’s a Tier 3 facility—top of the range—with scalable virtual capacity,” Mjuweni said.
He added that the Lilongwe facility would serve as the government’s primary data hub while the Blantyre National Data Centre—which was launched in 2022 and is currently operated by the Ministry of Information and Digitalisation, the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) and Huawei—will function as a backup.
The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Information and Digitalisation through a public-private partnership agreement, with funding from the World Bank’s Digital Malawi Project.
ICT Association of Malawi President Clarence Gama acknowledged the country’s technological progress, particularly in financial inclusion.
He emphasised the need for improved infrastructure, particularly reliable data centres, to support efficient service delivery.
“There’s been substantial growth over a short period, especially compared to a decade ago. With technology maturing, the level of growth is faster. We’re seeing developments like bank wallets that enable money transfers to individuals with or without bank accounts, ” Gama said.
