Title contenders’ in must-win matches

It is a case of snooze and lose in the 2024 TNM Super League championship at this stage as hot contenders Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers are in action this afternoon.

Leaders Silver have what looks like an easy fixture on paper as they host relegated Baka City at Silver Stadium whereas Wanderers face unpredictable Mafco at Kamuzu Stadium.

For now, Silver have an advantage in the title race as they have a five-point gap at the summit with 58 points whereas the Nomads have 53 points.

Both sides have played 26 matches.

With the title race becoming more interesting, the two sides are scheduled to face off in a potential decider in the title race this weekend.

At this stage, anything can happen in the title race. Destiny is in Silver’a and Wanderers’ hands.

Silver need eight points from the remaining four matches to win their first league title in 11 years.

On the other hand, Wanderers need to win all the remaining four matches and hope that Silver drop points.

Silver go into the match against Baka straight from a goal-less stalemate against deposed  champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets at the same venue.

Silver Coach Peter Mponda was confident that his charges would withstand pressure in the remaining games.

“We need to put extra effort to win the league title,’’ Mponda said.

Silver defeated Baka 2-0 in the first round.

Baka have nothing to lose as their fate in the league was already sealed a few weeks ago.

At Kamuzu Stadium, Wanderers are also in a must-win match against Mafco to keep their title hopes alive.

Wanderers Coach Bob Mpinganjira is still optimistic that his side can snatch the title under the noses of Silver.

“The title race is still open. We will fight up to the end. But our focus is to win the game against Mafco to stay in contention,” Mpinganjira said.

Wanderers and Mafco shared the spoils after a goal-less stalemate at Chitowe Stadium in the first round.

Elsewhere, this afternoon, Bullets have another tough task against Civil Service United at Civo Stadium.

Bullets are already out of the title race but they have a chance to finish second in the league.

They are third with 45 points, eight points behind Wanderers but have a game in hand.
