Three give Fam seven-day ultimatum on NRFA polls

Three former Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) officials have given a seven-day ultimatum to Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to address what they call “an anomaly” to the March 1 elective annual general meeting (EAGM).

The trio namely, former chairperson Chauka Mwasinga, former vice general secretary Desire Bellings Kiwombwe and Ralph Kasililika who was executive member in the previous committee.

SEEKING JUSTICE—Kasililika

During the controversial polls, Chauka, Kiwombwe and Kasililika boycotted the elections as such the returning officer ruled that they had lost their bid for the positions of chairperson, general secretary and vice chairperson respectively.

According to the letter which Malawi News Sport has seen dated April 16 2025, addressed to Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, the three are being represented by Khwima Mchizi of Clarkes Attorneys.

“Please be advised that our clients have instructed us to pursue justice through alternative means if we do not receive a response from you within seven days of the letter,” the letter reads.

The letter faults Fam for failing to address concerns which were raised earlier before the elections.

“As per requirement, the said affiliates are mandated to send four delegates who actually vote. The said delegates are supposed to be from the existing district committees. When the lists of delegates were sent for the elective conference, our clients noted that Chitipa Football Association’s list included names of individuals that were not part of the football committee of that district.

“It must be noted that it was the Chitipa Football Association executive committee that first noted the said irregularity and duly wrote to your office on the 3rd of February, 2025. Upon noticing the irregularity our clients protested their inclusion and you were duly notified via a litany of communication.

“Without really addressing the issue raised, your office went on and attempted to conduct the election on the 15th of February, 2025 which was marred by protests and was eventually cancelled on admission by your presiding officer that the issue of the delegates had to be sorted out first, ” the letter reads.

However, Gunda was yet to respond to our questionnaire as we went to press.

On his part, Mchizi said they would seek alternative means including seeking the intervention of the Court of Arbitration for Sports (Cas) if Fam does not respond within the seven days.

“We do not want to paint a picture that Fam will not comply looking at the magnitude of the matter at hand but any attempts to do that then we will have no other option but report the matter to Cas,” he said.

During the polls, Masiya Nyasulu was elected Chairperson.
