Tereza Master recognised for excellence

By Grecium Gama:

Future Vision Ministry (FVM) has recognized and awarded Tereza Master, a distinguished athlete from Mulanje District, for her 24 years of dedication to athletics in Malawi.

The ministry celebrated Master’s exceptional contributions to the sport and her enduring commitment to promoting sports across the country.

Among her achievements, Master won the Mulanje Mountain Porters’ Race in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

She received a trophy and a K120,000 cheque from the organization during a ceremony that took place at Mulanje Park Stadium.

FVM Executive Director Newton Sindo said the decision to honour Master was driven by the need to emphasize the importance of supporting all sporting activities, including those often overlooked.

Sindo vowed to increase support for local talent to inspire more children to venture into sports.

“Athletes like Tereza are an inspiration to the nation. We hope this award encourages more children to take up sports and pursue their dreams,” he said.

Mulanje District Sports Officer, Sheriff Malunga, praised FVM for the initiative, acknowledging its impact on the sports community.

“The award serves as a reminder that Tereza’s contributions to sports are valued. This will encourage her to continue striving for excellence,” Malunga said.

He said recognizing athletes such as Master highlights the importance of celebrating their achievements and investing in the growth of sports in Malawi.

Master urged corporate entities to recognize and reward athletes for their achievements during their active years.

She said honouring athletes while they are still active motivates them and nurtures their talents.

“Athletes give their all to make the nation proud, yet many remain unrecognized. We need companies to step up and honour our efforts while we are still active,” Master said.

Over the years, Malawi has also produced many other top athletes in various sports disciplines such as netball, football, boxing and long-distance running.

However, challenges such as limited funding, inadequate training facilities and lack of corporate sponsorship often hinder the development of local talent.
