Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga started the 2025 National Women’s Super League (NWSL) season on a high when she scored as Kansas City Current defeated Portland Thorns 3-1 at CPKC Stadium on Saturday.
The striker picked up from where she left in the 2024 season when she scored the opener just four minutes into the match to give Kansas the lead.
In a match monitored on the Kansas’ website, Michelle Cooper doubled the lead with a fine strike in the 24th minute.
Debinha netted the third goal in the 28th minute before Moultrie netted the consolation goal for Thorns.
Temwa said she was excited after scoring in a season opener.
“It feels great to start the season in style. We got all the important points and we will keep pushing,” Temwa said.
Temwa had a good debut campaign last season after smashing several records in the United States (US).
She became the first female player to win the golden boot award with 20 goals.
Temwa was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the US.
Additionally, Temwa scored against all 13 teams in the league.
Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili heaped praise on the forward.
“It is good for every player to start the season on a high. I am sure she will also have a good season like last year,” Fazili said.
Temwa featured for the Scorchers in an international friendly match against Zambia, which Malawi lost 2-0 at Reiz Arena, Lusaka, Zambia last month.
But she did not feature in the second match, in which the Scorchers beat the Copper Queens 3-2 at the same venue due to club commitments.
