Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga has said it was an easy decision to extend her stay at Kansas City Current for another three years.
The 27-year-old striker penned a new three-year contract with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side on Wednesday, which will keep her at the club until 2028.
Temwa, whose contract was due to expire at the end of this year, said she enjoyed her debut season.
“My team has been good to me and treated me well last season. Teammates are kind, my coach [Vlatko Andonovski] is amazing, and my KC community has been incredible. [With] all the support, it feels like home here [and] that is why I decided to extend my contract with KV Current,” Temwa is quoted as saying on the Current website.
The Scorchers striker said she has set her sights on winning the NWSL title in her second year in the US.
“This year, we hope to bring the trophy home for the fans, for KC,” she said.
Current narrowly missed out on the NWSL title after suffering a 3-2 loss to Orlando Pride in the semifinals.
But the Malawian, who is currently in California with her club for pre-season camp, had a good debut season, having smashed several records.
Current General Manager Caitlin Carducci said securing Temwa’s long-term future was a priority for the club.
“She had an amazing debut season but both Temwa and our club feel that we are just getting started in reaching our potential together. We are excited to see her wearing the Current crest for years to come,” Carducci said.
In her debut season, Temwa won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the US after outstanding performances with Current.
Additionally, she became the first female player to score 20 goals in a single regular season. She won the golden boot award.
Temwa also scored against all the 13 teams.
Meanwhile, National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) Chairperson Adelaide Migogo has hailed Temwa for her exploits.
“I am really proud of what Temwa and other women football players have achieved. She is a role model to the girl child,” she said.
Temwa and sister Tabitha were nominated for the 2024 Caf African Footballer of the Year award.
They made it into the top five but lost the accolade to Zambian Barbara Banda.
