Malawi Women’s National Football Team stars Temwa Chawinga and Rose Kabzere continued to shine for their respective teams in the United States (US) and France with remarkable performances on Saturday.
Temwa scored one goal as her US team Kansas City (KC) Current defeated Washington Spirit 0-2 in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL).
This is Temwa’s second league goal in as many matches.
“Chawinga found the back of the net with a stoppage time dagger and midfielder and midfielder Lo’eau La Bonta capitalised on a second-half penalty kick to help KC win its first road match of the season and second consecutive game,” part of a report on Current’s website reads.
Temwa won the 2024 NWSL Most Valuable Player award and currently leads the top goal scorers’ chart alongside Zambian Barbara Banda of Orlando Pride and Gia Corley from San Diego Wave.
Temwa said she is thrilled to have made a great start to the 2025 season.
“It feels great to start the season in great form. I hope I will continue scoring goals to help my team,” she said.
Temwa smashed several records last season to mark a fantastic debut season.
She became the first player in NWSL history to win the golden boot award with 20 goals.
Temwa also scored against all 13 teams in the league last season.
Kabzere netted her first brace in the D1 Arkema French Women’s League as Montpellier Women shared spoils following a 2-2 stalemate.
Kabzere scored her first goal of the match in the 75th minute before completing her brace five minutes to full time.
The talented youngster, who joined Montpellier on a three-year contract, has scored three goals this season.
“I am happy to score for the club. The goals will help to boost my confidence,” she said.
Montpellier are sixth on the log table with 26 points from 18 matches whereas Tabitha Chawinga’s Olympique Lyonnais are top after collecting 52 points.
