Strategic litigation crucial, stakeholders say

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has called on lawyers, NGOs and CSOs to join hands in promoting strategic litigation and advance human rights in the country.

This comes as MHRC is holding a Capacity Development workshop on strategic litigation with focus on promoting gender equality.

According to recent statistics, over 12,000 cases of gender-based violence were reported in 2024, with many more going unreported due to stigma and fear of retaliation.

Speaking to MIJ Online Chikondi Chijozi Chairperson for Malawi Human Rights Commission stressed on the importance of strategic litigation in promoting gender equality and protecting

the rights of vulnerable people in the country.

According to Chijozi, Malawi faces numerous challenges related to gender-based violence, access to justice, property grabbing and maternal health.
