Silver Ladies set up Ascent semis tie in Goshen Cup

Silver Strikers Ladies booked a semi-final berth against defending champions Ascent Academy in the Goshen- Fam Women’s National Championship.

This follows Silver Ladies’ 0-2 victory over rivals Civil Service United Women at Mpira Stadium, Chiwembe Township, in Blantyre Tuesday.

Goals from Deborah Henry and Chisomo Banda were enough to propel Silver Ladies to the semi-finals.

Silver Ladies coach Andrew Chikhosi asked his charges to guard against complacency.

“It was not an easy game but I am proud of the girls; they showed great character. We have no time to celebrate because we have a huge task ahead of us,” Chikhosi said.

On his part, Civil Women coach Collins Pofera said it was a bad day at the office.

“We did not play our usual game but the referees also contributed to our loss,” Pofera said.

Meanwhile, Ascent have advanced to the semi-finals following a 4-0 victory over MK Academy at the same venue on Monday.

Silver Ladies and Ascent shared fortunes during the regional play-offs after their matches ended in 1-1 stalemates.

The semi-finals will be played tomorrow at the same venue, with the final slated for the weekend.

National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) General Secretary Lustica Gondwe said this year’s tournament was the best ever.

“We have the best talent from all the teams. The teams prepared well. It shows we are moving in the right direction,” she said.

This year’s champions will pocket K9 million.
