Malawi Stock Exchange-listed National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc Tuesday donated K3 million to Sports Writers Association of Malawi (Swam), which is set to hold an Elective Annual General Meeting (EAGM) from March 21 to 23 this year.
The EAGM is scheduled for Salima District.
Speaking during the cheque presentation ceremony at NBM Towers in Blantyre Tuesday, NBM Product Development and Strategy Manager Weruzani Kunkwenzu said they decided to support sports journalists financially because sports is one of the areas they support.
He said that is why they sponsor the Mo626 college basketball tournament.
“Journalists do not only cover events, they unearth talent. They inform, unite and inspire the nation. In providing the K3 million to them, we are, therefore, investing in voices that tell the stories of our athletes and, in the process, helping shape the future of Malawi sports,” Kunkwenzu said.
He added that they would like journalists to continue reporting beyond events so that the country could meet goals it has set for the sports sector.
“This entails capturing the struggles, achievements and passion of our athletes. As you know, journalists do not only report on activities but capture the moment, too,” Kunkwenzu said.
On his part, Swam President Mphatso Malidadi said NBM’s contribution would go a long way in filling the financial gap they had and enable them to hold a “successful” AEGM.
“Our initial budget was K10 million but, due to the rising cost of commodities and services, it has reached K19.5 million. Therefore, the K3 million we have received from ‘the bank of the nation’ will go a long way in helping us fill that gap,” Malidadi said.
During the AGM, to be held at Safari Lodge, Swam members will be trained in latest boxing, football, cricket, among other sport codes, trends as well as have a presentation from the Malawi National Council of Sports.
It is not the first time the bank has supported Swam, as it also donated money towards its 2018 annual general meeting.
