Malawi National Netball Team joint coach Mary Waya has lauded the ongoing camp saying they are rectifying mistakes they observed during last month’s Africa Netball Cup in Namibia.
The Queens have been in camp in Blantyre in preparation for the Vitality Netball Nations 2025 Cup in England where they will face the hosts and two continental rivals, South Africa and Uganda.
Waya said they now have a full squad of local players after Blue Eagles Sisters duo Takondwa Lwazi and Nancy Mwaulambo joined camp.
“The week has been good. We started our training. Takondwa and Nancy, who were sick, have joined camp.
“Now, we started training with physical fitness. Then technical skills focussing on movement, attacking and shooting. The players are responding well. We are satisfied with how the training is going. Everyone is giving her all effort and we are seeing the changes,” she said.
Waya said the coaching panel would continue improving the side to address the shortfalls they observed in Namibia.
“We are polishing the mistakes we made at the Africa Cup. We added more players who were not in the team and we have filled the gaps that were there,” she said.
Netball analyst Neffie Kam’mata said the Queens should aim at building a good side.
“They should not go for results but rather build a team for future events,” she said.
For the first time since 2010, the Queens finished the Africa Netball Cup without a medal.
In a third-place playoff, Malawi lost the bronze medal match to Zimbabwe 48-42. They also lost to Uganda 51-43 and eventual champions South Africa 65-35.
Before Waya and her co-coach Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa took over the mantle from Joanna Kachilika, the Queens were battered by Spar Proteas losing 68-31, 69-38 and 69- 24 during the Spar International Challenge Test Series between October and November last year.
