Peter Mponda will not poach from Silver Strikers

TNM Super League championship winning coach Peter Mponda has promised not to recruit players and members of his backroom staff at his next destination.

Mponda, who has been heavily linked with a return to his childhood side FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, resigned from Silver on Thursday and the club’s management accepted his resignation later that night.

The Malawi National Football Team former captain said he does not want to create enmity by poaching players from his former side.

“I will not go back to Silver to plunder the team. I am not interested in destroying something I built. As such I will not poach players nor members of the backroom team from the side. The good thing is that the coaches have a running contract with the club so it is an issue of contract between the club and them [members of the backroom staff],” he said.

Upon his appointment at Silver, Mponda engaged Emmanuel Chipatala as the Central Bankers Team Manager whereas Zicco Mkanda was hired as strikers and fitness trainer.

He also recalled Victor Mphande as the team’s goalkeepers’ trainer.

However, Mponda who guided Silver to their first league championship in 11 years declined to disclose his next destination.

“Discussions are ongoing,” he said.

Silver issued a statement on Thursday night regrettably accepting Mponda’s resignation.

“The development comes four months after Mr Peter Mponda signed a two-year extension to his initial contract, demonstrating his commitment and passion for the club. During his tenure, Mr Mponda’s exceptional leadership and technical expertise propelled Silver Strikers to remarkable success, culminating in the club being crowned the 2024 TNM Championship winners,” the statement reads.

Reports suggest Mponda would be hired by Bullets who have not renewed Kalisto Pasuwa’s contract which expires on December 31.

Bullets acting Chief Executive Officer Albert Chigoga declined to comment on the issue.

However in a statement released Friday on the club’ website Bullets indicating

“FCB Nyasa Big Bullets can confirm that Kalisto Pasuwa will leave his position as Head Coach on 31 December 2024, when his contract expires,” the statement said.

Pasuwa won five TNM Super League titles, five Charity Shields, three Airtel Top 8 Cups, two FDH Bank Cups and one Castel Challenge Cup, making him one of the greatest coaches in the club’s history.
