Speaker of National Assembly Catherine Gotani-Hara has donated K5 million to Mzuzu City Hammers for an outstanding performance in the just ended season.
The team reached the final of Ibongetse Castel Challenge Cup after beating FCB Nyasa Big Bullets on post-match penalties but they lost to Mighty Mukuru Wanderers 1-0 in the final.
Hammers ended in fourth position in TNM Super League.
Gotani-Hara, who hosted the team to a luncheon at her residence at Lusangazi in Mzuzu, said the team has made people in Mzuzu proud for emerging runners-up in Castel Cup and finishing on fourth position in elite league.
She said people from the area want the team to win the cup next season, to take it to the Northern Region.
“You are our sons from here and that is why I decided to invite you here so that we can celebrate together with your performance and encourage you to do more better this season.
“If you win the TNM Super League or any cup, I will welcome you at Jenda Trading Centre with fellow Mzuzu residents because we love you,” Hara, who supports Bullets, said.
Hara, who is also Malawi Congress Party (MCP) first deputy president and Member of Parliament for Mzimba North-East, pledged to continue supporting the team, which its origin is from Ekwendeni, her constituency.
In return, the team donated a jersey to Hara, describing her as one of the chief supporters.
Hammers Coach Konda Ikwanga said the support has energised the team in preparations for next season.
“This has come as a surprise because we did not expect that she can invite us here,” Ikwanga said.
Meanwhile, members of parliament for Kasungu North, Mike Bango and Mzimba South, Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere also donated K200,000 and K100,000 respectively to the team.
