Over 100 youngsters have been shortlisted to undergo further development training after attending Nico Group powered netball trials, Times Sport has learnt.
Under the ‘Tiri ndi Plan’ [we have a plan] scouting exercise, youngsters aged between 17 and 25 are currently camping in Lilongwe for fine tuning.
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) selectors identified the players from the three regions after conducting a regional scouting exercise.
According to the scout report, players with heights ranging from 167 centimetres (cm) to 181cm were given preference.
Nam General Secretary Yamikani Khungwa-Kauma said the exercise was going in line with plans.
“I can confirm that, so far, we have 91 players in camp but we still expect some [players] by Tuesday [yesterday].
“We hope to find schools in Blantyre for those that are from afar so that the coaches can continue training them periodically during holidays,” Khungwa- Kauma said.
Meanwhile, Nico Holdings Limited Corporate Affairs Manager Mbumba Mlia- Ndasauka has expressed gratitude for the development.
“We want to thank Nam for kick-starting Tiri ndi Plan [we have a plan] agenda. We hope to have a very strong team in the next few years. Our opponents have been having height advantage over us for a long time and this exercise will help our team to be strong again,” Mlia-Ndasauka said.
Commenting on the development, Malawi National Netball Team co-coach Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa said the programme would help the Queens reclaim glory.
“We have suffered a lot in recent years because of the lack of a succession plan and tall players. If the players can give more time to learning, we will surely have a strong team again in the future,” Kaluwa said.
The Queens are currently ranked eighth in the World.
