MRA draws positives from tax compliance

The Malawi Revenue Authority has commended the general public for their adherence to paying taxes.

Dorothy Mataya Stakeholder Engagement manager at MRA made the remarks in Mzuzu during a media training session on new tax measures.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Mataya attributed to the rise in the compliance of domestic tax remittances to people’s realization of the use of the revenue collected in funding development activities as well as financing delivery of social service.

“I can say there is an improvement in domestic tax compliance. I think people now see the need to pay taxes because they can see various development activities that are happening in the country,” Mataya said.

Stakeholders sharing notes.

However, Mataya said smuggling remains MRA’s biggest challenge saying it affects revenue collection but was quick to say the authority has introduced various initiatives aimed at addressing the same.

“Smuggling is our biggest challenges and we are losing a lot, however there a number of initiatives like Tax Stamps that we are implementing to address the vice. We are also bringing drones that will be patrolling our border-lines. As you known most of our border line is porous, as in we have no security and the porous borderline is vast the drones will assist in that regard,” Mata said.

This far, Mataya has pleaded with media practitioners to assist the authority in disseminating messages on the benefits of using MRA established border posts stressing on its impact on revenue collection which contributes to national development.
