Minister of Trade and Industry, Vitumbiko Mumba, has summoned Illovo and Salima Sugar companies to submit a list of all licensed sugar distributors in the country.
Mumba announced that, moving forward, every truck transporting sugar will be escorted by a trade officer and a police officer to ensure transparency and prevent hoarding.
He blamed the current sugar shortages on some distributors who are deliberately stockpiling the product to create artificial scarcity.

“With elections approaching, there are individuals trying to sabotage the system and portray President Lazarus Chakwera as a failure,” Mumba said.
To address the issue, the government is also planning to introduce a bill that would allow it to regulate prices of essential goods, including sugar.
