Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have partnered Smile Life Insurance with the aim of registering supporters and also putting them under Life Insurance Policy.
Through the initiative, dubbed Nyerere Membership, the team targets to reach out to seven million supporters across the country.
Speaking on Saturday in Blantyre during the unveiling ceremony, Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi said that once the supporters register, they will automatically be joining the insurance cover.
“The exercise aims at registering our supporters so that this helps us to curb acts of hooliganism because we will be able to easily track the culprits. Secondly, the initiative will also help our supporters to get assistance when they are bereaved through insurance cover,” Ndovi said.
He expressed optimism that the exercise will this time bear fruits, having previously flopped.
“We will have a blended approach where people can physically and electronically register. We are living in a digital world where people will be able to register through WhatsApp and other platforms. Those not on the internet can also register through a short code,” he said.
The supporters will be able to choose from various categories which begin with a Nyerere Classic Annual Premium worth K10,000, Nyerere Bronze at K60,000, Nyerere Silver at K90,000, Nyerere Gold at K120,000 and Nyerere Platinum at K175,000 per year.
Smile Life Insurance Chief Executive Officer Beatrice Mangwana said the arrangement is of significance to both parties.
“This is a funeral insurance cover and it will enable the supporters to have their funeral expenses covered. So we encourage more fans to register,” Mangwana said.
Wanderers national supporters chairperson Mervin Nkunika said they would mobilise fellow supporters through zonal and regional committees to register.
