MHRC to inquire into sexual allegations

MHRC to inquire into sexual allegations
GUNDA—Fam has
already instituted its
own internal inquiry

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has written Football Association of Malawi (Fam), expressing its intention to conduct an independent inquiry into the alleged sexual misconduct involving one of the football governing body’s officials.

The official is alleged to have carried out the acts in Zambia and South Africa, where the Malawi National Women’s Football Team had friendlies.

MHRC Executive Secretary Habiba Osman said they wrote Fam to facilitate the process of meeting the concerned parties in person.

“We want to meet in person all those allegedly involved in the matter and interview them at Fam offices. You may wish to know that the Gender Act mandates us to pursue this matter.

“We are aware that Fam has its own internal procedures on how to pursue the matter at hand and we respect that. But, as a body, we feel an independent investigation on the matter is also important. So we will play our role as required by the law,” Osman said.

In its response to the letter, Fam promised to provide access to relevant documentation and facilitate the interviews as may be required during the statutory body’s visit to its offices.

“Fam takes the allegations raised with seriousness and remains committed to upholding the principles of dignity, safety and respect for all individuals involved in football. As you are aware, Fam has already instituted its own internal inquiry into the matter in line with Fifa integrity and safeguarding protocols.

“In line with our respect for the commission’s mandate under both the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi and the Gender Equality Act, we wish to confirm our full cooperation with your investigation team. Kindly advise on the proposed date(s) of the visit so we can make appropriate logistical arrangements and ensure the availability of relevant staff. Please be assured of our continued commitment to transparency, accountability and protection of all our stakeholders,” the letter, signed by Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda and dated April 22, 2025, reads.

The allegations culminated in the suspension of Fam executive member Daud Mtanthiko last week as Fam stepped up its investigations.
