Massa appeals for more Youth Games funding

By Bernard Mhone:

The Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) has appealed to the corporate world to channel more resources towards Youth Games to develop sports in the country.

Massa President Blackson Malamula made the remarks during the finals of the 2024 Youth Games at Mzuzu Stadium on Tuesday.

“The Youth Games provide youngsters with a good platform to showcase their skills and talent. Since we embarked on the initiative, there have been many success stories,” Malamula said.

The government, through the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS), is the sole sponsor of the games.

It provided K223 million for this year’s games.

However, Malamula said the money was not enough to incorporate all sporting disciplines.

“In future, we want to include other games but we do not have enough funds. Other associations are knocking on our doors to include them in this event in the near future,” he said.

The athletes competed in football, netball, volleyball, basketball, athletics and chess.

On his part, MNCS spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa said there is a need for collaboration to develop sports in the country.

Meanwhile, Ntulumbwa has said they are discussing the issue of increasing investments in sports with government parastatals and companies.

“We need companies to collaborate with the government in efforts aimed at developing sports. The demand for resources is huge as we provide funds to 42 associations,” Ntulumbwa said.

In football, South East Education Division (Seed) emerged champions following a 1-0 win over South West Education Division.

In netball, South West Education Division (Swed) emerged champions after defeating North West Education Division by 42- 37 baskets
