Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kwabwira has alleged that former President Peter Mutharika is relying on medical injections to maintain his health—a claim suggesting his condition is being concealed for political reasons.
Speaking on Thursday ahead of Malawi’s 61st Independence Day celebrations, Kwabwira called for a medical review of Mutharika’s health. She accused factions within the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of promoting his candidacy despite concerns over his age and physical condition.

“It seems someone in the DPP wants Mutharika to stand so they can rule from behind the scenes,” Kwabwira said.
Despite her criticism, Kwabwira extended an invitation to all former presidents, including Mutharika, to attend the Independence Day celebrations on July 6 at Bingu National Stadium. She emphasized the importance of national unity and recognizing past leaders.
Kwabwira also commended President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration for progress in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. She highlighted the MCP’s dedication to rebuilding the nation, even in the face of natural disasters and economic hardships.
In response, Mutharika rejected the invitation, claiming he was not officially contacted and stating he would not attend even if he were.
“Why feast with MCP while Malawians suffer from poverty, drug shortages, and fuel crises?” Mutharika wrote on the DPP’s official Facebook page.
The exchange highlights escalating political tensions in the lead-up to the September 16 general elections, with Mutharika’s potential candidacy still the subject of speculation.
This year’s Independence Day celebration, themed “Restoring Broken Foundations: Taking Malawi Forward,” will be led by President Chakwera. Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko is expected to attend as a guest of honour and will receive the honorary “Freedom of the City” award.
