Malawi under-17 boys and girls national football Teams are expected to arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa, today for the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) championships.

The two teams left the country by road on Sunday.

The tournaments are expected to start tomorrow and end on December 14.

According to a statement on the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Facebook page, the boys tournament would act as a qualifier for the Confederation of African Football TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations finals.

“Malawi Boys, who are in group A alongside Mozambique, Lesotho and Angola, will play their first match against Mozambique on December 4, with the second match against Angola scheduled for December 6. The last group stage match will be against Lesotho on December 8,” the statement reads.

Malawi under-17 boys coach Enos Chatama believes that the boys have all it takes to make the nation happy.

“We have assembled a good squad and I am sure the boys will perform well.

“All we are looking for is to start on a high in our first match against Mozambique because it is important to win the opening match,” Chatama said.

The two finalists for the tournament will book a place at the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations finals to be hosted by Ivory Coast next year.

The girls join South Africa, Namibia and Madagascar in the competition and will play their opening match against the hosts on December 5.

Their second match is against Madagascar on December 7.
