Audit, tax and advisory services firm Grant Thornton Malawi celebrated its six-year anniversary on Friday, marking a significant milestone since its entry into the market in 2018.
Partner and Executive Director Hastings Bofomo Nyirenda attributed the firm’s continued existence to the strong working relationships with stakeholders.
Among its milestones, the firm—previously under the KPMG franchise—this year expanded its footprint into Mozambique, where it began operations in August.
Speaking at an executive cocktail event in Blantyre, Nyirenda highlighted the firm’s growth from four to six partners and its commitment to providing exceptional services to clients with the goal of becoming the industry leader.
“When we transitioned, many people were skeptical because they didn’t fully understand what Grant Thornton stood for.
“Now, we’ve grown bigger and stronger than ever. The market is excited and we believe we will continue to support our clients effectively,” Nyirenda stated.
Lamion Gama, Managing Partner, reflected on the firm’s journey, noting its resilience and significant market share growth from humble beginnings.
“It wasn’t easy to leave a large company and establish ourselves as a new firm in Malawi. We worked hard on marketing and convincing clients.
“Despite facing challenges, we knew our decisions would yield positive results,” Gama said.
St John’s Ambulance President James Naphambo noted that many Malawian-run companies had failed to grow due to a lack of strong partnerships.
CDH Investment Bank Deputy Chief Executive Officer Beatrix Mosiwa applauded Grant Thornton’s expansion into Mozambique, describing it as a sign of growth.
“As a regulated banking institution, it’s crucial to have our books audited by reliable firms. Grant Thornton has partnered us for years, delivering on their promises. We look forward to continued collaboration,” Mosiwa said.
