Malawians will now be in a position to buy fertiliser made in liquid form following a partnership between Smallholder Farmers Fertiliser Revolving Fund of Malawi (SFFRFM) and an Indian firm.
The government-owned firm has partnered Agventure Resources Limited Malawi to produce the liquid fertiliser, known as Nano Urea, and make it available to local Malawians at an affordable price.
SFFRFM Commercial Director Ali Chioko said on the sidelines of the National Agriculture Fair in Blantyre that the new product offers solutions to farmers who have been grappling with high fertiliser prices.
“Our primary mandate is to sell fertiliser to farmers in the country and, now, we have partnered an Indian company to be supplying liquid fertiliser to the country. The product will be available in all our shops and is 10 percent cheaper compared to other fertiliser they know,” Chioko said.
He expressed hope that the new product would lessen challenges the country has been experiencing.
Agventure Resources Limited Malawi Country Director Bhupender Singh said the country stands to benefit from the new product.
“At least 37 countries across the world are using the fertiliser because it is not only affordable but easily accessible. A 500 milli-litre bottle is the same as a 50-kilogramme bag. The country will also benefit from the fertiliser because it is environment-friendly,” he said.
Players in the agriculture sector took advantage of the three-day fair to showcase their products.
This year’s fair was held under the theme ‘Driving towards Export-Oriented Agriculture through Commercialisation and Innovation’.
