Malawi Olympic Committee budgets K25 million for Anoca meet

The Malawi Olympic Committee has budgeted K25 million to host this year’s Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) Zone 6 General Assembly.

Moc is set to host the assembly from February 21 to 23 at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach Hotel in Salima District.

Chairperson for the Local Organising Committee, Dennis Kumwenda, said all was set for the event as Moc set aside K25 million to cater for logistics during the assembly.

“We are ready to host the big meeting. We have finalised all logistical arrangements ahead of the event. We are optimistic of hosting a successful event. This amount [K25 million] has been set aside to cover logistics,” he said.

The assembly will attract delegates from 10 countries including hosts Malawi, Zambia, South Africa, Mozambique, Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and eSwatini.

Over 30 delegates are expected to attend the meeting.

The delegates are expected to start arriving in the country this Friday.

Kumwenda also confirmed that Moc had decided to field a candidate either on the post of president or general secretary during the elections.

“Once Anoca secretariat announces a legitimate detailed list of contestants, then the public would be made aware [of the issue],” he said. According to Kumwenda, delegates are expected to discuss factors and suggest solutions to the problem of athletes’ underperformance at major events such as Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
