Malawi Karate Federation to host historic first National Championship

The Malawi Karate Federation (MKF) is set to make history this weekend with the launch of its first-ever Karate National Championship.

The highly anticipated event will take place today at Hope Green Light Secondary School in Area 24, Lilongwe, starting at 8:00 AM.

According to Edgar Mtulumbwa, spokesperson for the Malawi National Council of Sports, the championship has drawn participation from over 80 athletes, including 10 female competitors—an encouraging development for gender inclusion in the sport.

“This is a significant milestone for karate in Malawi,” Mtulumbwa said. “It not only reflects the federation’s commitment to professionalizing the sport but also demonstrates growing national interest in karate as a competitive discipline.”

The championship will serve multiple objectives: raising the level of competitive karate in the country, providing a platform for talent identification, and preparing skilled athletes for future representation on the international stage.

Participants will compete across various age and skill categories. Winners in each category will be awarded medals in recognition of their performance and dedication.

This national championship marks the MKF’s third major tournament, following the successful hosting of the Japanese Ambassador’s Championship and the Karate Zen Open Championships.

With the launch of this national platform, the Malawi Karate Federation continues to take meaningful steps toward establishing a vibrant, inclusive, and competitive karate culture across the country.
