A production known as Mphekesela, which is the first initiative of a newly found Malawi/ German dance initiative Moving Borders: An educational dance project, is set to premiere on Wednesday for invited guests followed by free public shows this coming weekend at Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe.
A press statement from Mwezi Arts says over the past three weeks, Mphekesela cast has intensively engaged in classes and creation rehearsal dealing with the topic of gossip, slander and the source of rumours (mphekesela).
Working full day in a professional studio, the cast explored how rumours arise? Why can’t we stop talking about our fellows behind their backs? How does it feel to be the victim of gossip?
The cast has created an unparalleled, mind boggling story told through movement, emotion, sounds, music and puzzling text.
According to the press statement, the richness of the choreography and movement dwells on the exceptional fusion of traditional, contemporary, hip- hop and even ballet genres.
“You only have to watch this dance masterpiece to experience the vibes. The dancers are definitely geared for the premiere,” reads the statement.
It further says that Mphekesela is an energetic piece that seeks to answer essential questions, sharing a positive message on the negative effects of gossip among individuals or society at large.
The production is a cooperation between nine Malawian dancers that were auditioned earlier this year and Lucia Zoe Kehn from Germany, a contemporary and hip-hop dancer that has lived in Salima and Lilongwe dancing with several Malawian dance groups as part of her dance research and studies.
This is a production produced in a collaboration with Mwezi Arts/Madsoc Theatre, a company and venue that produces and foster promotion of creative art forms such as theatre, dance, music, film and radio.
The statement says that The Moving Borders initiative recognises various problems in the local dance sector and strives to alleviate them by creating paid work and training opportunities for Malawian dancers as well as working on establishing a long-term international dance exchange platforms between Germany and Malawi.
The initial project is financed through Crowd funding.
