By Roy Nkosi in Kigali, Rwanda:
Vice President Michael Usi has urged Malawians who are in the diaspora to prioritise investing in their mother country so that they can help shore up the economy.
Usi told the Malawian community in Kigali, Rwanda, that it is the responsibility of Malawians to develop their own country.
“You should be ambassadors of your country, speak positively about your country, make positive contributions to your motherland and capitalise on the opportunities that are there to develop your country.
“We need to utilise the expertise that is available in the diaspora community for the improvement of different sectors of the Malawi economy. Your experiences here can help us formulate a blueprint to add value to Malawi’s development agenda,” Usi said.
The Vice President highlighted the cleanliness of the city of Kigali as one thing Malawi can emulate.
He said he included Lilongwe City Mayor Ester Sagawa in his entourage because he wants her to learn a thing or two about how to transform the administrative capital of Malawi.
The Vice President also encouraged the Malawian community to form communication channels through which to advise the government on issues that include investment opportunities that are available in Malawi and for Malawians elsewhere.
Speaking on behalf of the community, chairperson for the Malawian community in Kigali, Atupele Zamba, described the meeting as fruitful.
“Those in the diaspora can work positively with the Government of Malawi to develop the country,” Zamba said.
Deputy Chief Secretary Janet Banda and Malawi’s Deputy High Commissioner to Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, Deborah Mitawa, were among those that joined Usi at the meeting.
