Locals to understudy Kalisto Pasuwa

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has advised incoming Malawi National Football Team Coach Kalisto Pasuwa to consider choosing local coaches as part of his backroom staff.

This comes after the association’s executive committee first quarter meeting approved the hiring of the Zimbabwean mentor in Mzuzu on Saturday.

Fam First Vice President Madalitso Kuyera, who is also the association’s technical sub-committee chairperson, confirmed the decision to hire Pasuwa as Flames coach.

“Pasuwa has been informed and, in principle, he has agreed but other details will be communicated in due course,” Kuyera said.

Kuyera added that the Zimbabwe’s Warriors former coach would be given freedom to choose his deputies.

“We know that Pasuwa is a good coach; so, we want some of our local coaches to tap knowledge from him. But he has to choose which local coaches he will be comfortable to work with,” he said.

Pasuwa’s approval comes just one week after the association’s technical sub-committee recommended the Zimbabwean during its meeting in Salima District.

During the meeting in Salima, the committee recommended that Pasuwa should be given a one-year contract with an option to extend depending on his performance.

But Kuyera refused to disclose details about the duration of Pasuwa’s contract, saying the details would be publicised after the conclusion of discussions with the FCB Nyasa Big Bullets former coach.

“The process will be finalised as soon as possible so that he starts preparing for upcoming assignments,” Kuyera said.

Pasuwa, who is already in the country, was not readily available for his comment yesterday.

His local representative Felix Ngamanya Sapao asked for ample time as he was locked in a meeting Friday.

As interim Flames coach, Pasuwa worked with Peter Mponda, who has since replaced the Zimbabwean at Bullets, and Moyale Barracks coach Pritchard Mwansa as first and second assistant coach, respectively.

National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) also proposed Alex Ngwira and MacDonald Mtetemera as some of the local coaches to understudy Pasuwa.

Pasuwa is expected to lead the Flames as they take part in a 2025 Africa Nations Champions (Chan) play-off next month.

The Flames will also face Namibia in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
