President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to tour Zomba Stadium tomorrow to appreciate progress of construction works.
State House Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda confirmed the development Wednesday.
“Zomba Stadium is one of the various projects that His Excellency will inspect during his tour of the Eastern Region,” Kasunda said.
Zomba Stadium is among sports projects that have delayed due to a number of reasons, including lack of funds and design changes.
Newly elected Zomba City Mayor Christopher Jana said recently that he would strive to ensure the completion of the project.
“For a long time, Zomba residents have been denied an opportunity to watch matches due to the absence of a proper facility. I will do everything possible to make sure that Zomba Stadium is completed as soon as possible,” he said.
Construction of the 20,000- seater facility started in 2017 but works have been moving at a snail’s pace.
One of the Zomba residents, Rajab Namaraka, bemoaned the delay in completing the project.
“We have waited for so long for the project. We hope the facility will be completed soon so that we can watch Super League matches here,” he said.
Once completed, the stadium will have a running track, netball and volleyball courts.
Six stadia in Zomba, Chitipa, Nkhotakota, Ntcheu, Thyolo and Mzimba have failed to beat construction deadlines for varied reasons.
