Kenyans demand justice for blogger killed in police custody

The death of a Kenyan blogger, Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody earlier this month, has sparked outrage among citizens, as three police officers have been charged with the murder of the blogger.

The 31-year-old blogger was arrested after Kenya’s deputy police chief Eliud Lagat filed a complaint, accusing the blogger of defaming him on social media. His death has attracted protests held to demand justice.

The deputy police chief stepped aside last week, awaiting the outcome of investigations into Ojwang’s death. Lagat has since denied the accusation.

Samson Kiprotich, Talaam James Mukhwana, and Peter Kimani are the three officers accused of having a hand in the death of the blogger, and they were charged along with three civilians.

Meanwhile, all six appeared in court on Monday, but have not yet pleaded.

At first, police indicated that Ojwang died of self-inflicted wounds, but were forced to withdraw the statement after a post-mortem found that he was likely to have died from battering wounds.
