Journalists called to support truth, educate voters before elections

Journalists in Karonga District have been urged to intensify efforts in promoting truth and encouraging the election of knowledgeable, capable leaders committed to national development.

Edgar Phiri, Chairperson for the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Karonga District, called during the Karonga Press Club’s Annual General Meeting held on Saturday under the theme, ‘Strengthening Press Freedom for Credible and Conflict-free Elections’.

Phiri emphasised that journalists play a critical role in shaping public opinion and must avoid spreading misinformation or writing misleading stories, as this may discourage voters from electing competent leaders.

He therefore warned that negative or inaccurate reporting could undermine the democratic process and hinder the district’s and the nation’s development.

“Journalists must take responsibility in their work by serving as educators and fact-checkers. They should also mediate and facilitate peace, especially during the election period,” he explained.

Nathan Sakala, the District Officer for the National Initiative for Civic Education and Public Trust (NICE), echoed similar sentiments. He noted that although many citizens have registered to vote, a large portion still lacks understanding of the importance of casting an informed vote.

He emphasised that journalists have a crucial role in educating the public on the value of voting wisely.

In her remarks, Wezzie Mwangonde, Vice Chairperson of the Karonga Press Club, affirmed the club’s commitment to supporting civic education initiatives in the district. She stated that the association would continue to actively engage the public to ensure that voters are well-informed and empowered to elect competent leaders.

The AGM was conducted through financial support from KPC, Job Msowoya, an aspiring Member of Parliament for Karonga Central Constituency, and Mngasulwa Mwambande, the MP for Karonga North Constituency.
