Jappie Mhango to sit in Anoca board

Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) President Jappie Mhango has been inducted into the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) board by virtue of being the regional leader; that is, Anoca Zone VI President.

This follows elections at the continental body—Anoca— which took place on Saturday in Algiers, Algeria, with the incumbent President Mustafa Berraf assuming the position uncontested for a third term.

Moc Director General Naomi Chinatu confirmed that Mhango has been incorporated into the continental body’s board.

“Firstly, it is important to note that Mhango is the regional president for Anoca Zone VI, which covers 10 Southern African countries.

“Now Mhango has been inducted into the Anoca board on account of being Zone 6 president. Anoca board governs sporting matters on the continent [of Africa]. This is a milestone for Malawi as we have representation at the top level,” Chinatu said.

Mhango said he was humbled to have taken a seat in the continental Anoca board.

“It is an honour to serve in the continental body, where key decisions regarding sports development on the continent are made.

“This is where you rub shoulders with the best in regards to sports management,” Mhango said.

During the continental polls, Joao Da Costa Alegre Afonso from Sao Tome and Principe went unopposed for the post of first vice president.

The meeting also elected Felomena from Cape Verde as its second vice president replacing Matlohang from Lesotho, who lost 44 to 11.

The third vice president position went to Alfred Foloko of Zambia, who beat two contestants namely Khaled Ezankouli of Libya and Minavoa Julien from Benin.

Coincidentally, Foloko handed Anoca Zone VI powers to Mhango during regional elections last month, when he did not seek re-election.
