Mighty Wanderers playmaker Isaac ‘Chair’ Kaliati and Leticia Chinyamula of Ascent Academy have been named players of the season in men’s and women’s division respectively during the inaugural Football Association of Malawi (Fam) awards.

During a glittering event at Sunbird Mount Soche last night, Kaliati, who has been omitted from the Flames squad of local players, reigned supreme after beating Silver Strikers goalkeeper George Chikooka and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets forward Babatunde Adepoju, to take home a cool K3 million.

Chinyamula received a similar amount for emerging the best in the women’s category.

Seasoned analyst Charles Nyirenda received the Fam President’s [Fleetwood Haiya] special award and he received K2 million.

This was the first time for Fam to combine awards of two competitions, FDH Bank Cup and Castel Challenge Cup.

In other awards, Bullets Coach Peter Mponda won the coach of the year award for steering his former side Silver to TNM Super League championship glory.

Mponda saw off Kalisto Pasuwa, formerly of Bullets but now Flames mentor, and Blue Eagles Coach Eliya Kananji.

In the women’s section, Thom Mkorongo of Ascent beat Linda Kasenda and Maggie Chombo- Sadik to emerge Women’s Coach of the season.

Referee Godfrey Nkhakananga emerged the best whereas Lameck Phiri was named the best assistant.

Beach Soccer star Isaac Kajamu was voted Beach Soccer Player of the season whereas Prince Kumwembe from Villa FC was selected the best young men’s player of the year.

Wanderers supporters were rewarded for their sweat and songs as they were voted the best.

In Castel Cup awards, Wanderers forward Clement Nyondo got two awards, winning the player of the tournament and top goal scorer awards. He scored 13 goals.

New Nomads goalkeeper Chancy Mtete won the goalkeeper of the tournament accolade for helping his former side Mzuzu City Hammers to reach the final of the Castel Cup.

Goalkeeper for Premier Division side Precious Masamba from Panthers won the discovery of the tournament award.

In FDH Bank Cup awards, Eagles midfielder Paul Master from Blue Eagles was voted player of the tournament.

Moyale Barracks striker Emmanuel Allan won the golden boot award with nine goals whereas his teammate goalkeeper Joshua Waka was voted the competition’s discovery of the tournament.

The function attracted high profile officials from Niger and Sudan. Senior corporate figures from FDH Bank and Castel Malawi were also in attendance.
