Retired managing partner for Deloitte Malawi Nkondola Uka’s 40-year stay in the auditing, tax and business advisory firm has been described as a beacon of ethical standards and mentorship among peers.
Business captains, on Friday, took turns to celebrate Uka, who retired from the firm.
Uka joined Deloitte on July 11 1983 after completing his Bachelor of Social Science degree in Economics at Chancellor College, University of Malawi. He was admitted as a partner in the firm on June 1 1996.
He also served as President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (Icam), formerly known as the Society of Accountants in Malawi (Socam), and chaired the Malawi Accountants Board.
One of his peers, renowned corporate governance expert Jimmy Lipunga, said Uka leaves behind a thriving firm and a lasting legacy of excellence in Malawi’s accounting and business sectors.
“Retirement offers a new chapter, allowing individuals to continue contributing in different ways while enjoying the freedom that comes with it,” Lipunga said.
Illovo Sugar Malawi Managing Director, Lekani Katandula, described Uka as a mentor who has significantly impacted the careers of many professionals, including himself.
“Uka has been more than just a leader. He has been a mentor to many of us. His wisdom, experience and dedication to nurturing the next generation of professionals have left an indelible mark on all of us,” Katandula said.
In his speech, Uka encouraged the next generation of accountants to remain dedicated, upholding high ethical standards and continuous learning to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world.
“I am proud to have contributed to the growth of the accounting and auditing industry in Malawi. The future of our profession depends on your commitment to maintaining the highest standards while staying ahead of industry trends,” Uka said.
