Hygienic practices enforced as three prisons register the pinky eye infection

The prison department is enforcing sanitation measures in cells so as to deal with a situation in which three facilities have registered cases of pink eye disease.

Speaking to MIJ Online Chimwemwe Shawa spokesperson for the Malawi Prison Services said the cases have been reported in Lilongwe, Mangochi and Karonga districts.

He said they have since enforced hygienic practices and are working with health officials to treat the affected inmates and to control prospects of the further spread.

The Viral Conjunctivitis, commonly known as Pink Eye, affects the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent layer of tissue that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid.

In recent weeks, Malawi has been facing a concerning outbreak of the Pink or Red eye disease, with over 800 cases reported across the country.

Health Minister, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, confirmed the alarming development at a media briefing in Zomba , highlighting the need for urgent action to contain the spread of the disease.
