Nurses, Midwives start ‘strike’ next week

Health services are expected to face a massive interruption from Monday next week, ahead of a highly anticipated sit-in by nurses and midwives.

Hospital operations will be disrupted.

National Organization of Nurses and Midwives in Malawi (NONM) and Physician Assistants Association of Malawi (PAAM) are expected to lead the strike.

The organizations have been pushing for the implementation of sector-specific allowances.

Meanwhile, Nonm and PAAM have expressed concerns that despite agreements with authorities being made- government is yet to implement the allowances.

Commenting on the matter, George Jobe health rights advocate, expressed concern over the delays saying it could affect effective health service delivery.

Jobe has since advised the parties involved to have the matter settled in order to avoid disruptions to the country’s health service.
