About 22,339 households in Lilongwe will today receive K150, 000 each, under the Price Shock Emergency Urban Cash Transfers (Mtukula Pa Khomo Wa M’Mizinda), targeting ultra-poor households within city wards.
This comes as government is today disbursing over 3 billion kwacha to the beneficiaries, aimed at uplifting their livelihood under the Social Support for Resilient Livelihood Project (SSRP).
Speaking to MIJ Online, Paul Chipeta Coordinator for the SSRP project at the National Local Government Finance Committee, said the unconditional cash transfer is aimed at providing a critical safety net for the most marginalized urban population, to support their consumption needs, and is targeting all the cities of Blantyre, Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Zomba.
Chipeta has therefore disclosed that in Phase One; eligible beneficiaries in Lilongwe will receive K150,000 each, through their Airtel mobile wallets today.
According to Chipeta, Phase Two will focus on transferring funds into an additional 16,328 beneficiaries’ wallets (Airtel) who are currently undergoing the Know Your Customer (KYC) verification.
“The public is further informed that Phase Three, the final phase, will address grievances and unresolved issues. Through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, the Government of Malawi will ensure that all eligible beneficiaries access the support and that their grievances, if any, are addressed and resolved satisfactorily,” said Chipeta.
In April this year, government also disbursed K6.6 billion to 43,300 beneficiary households under the program in Blantyre city.
The Price Shock Urban Emergency Cash Transfer is being implemented under the Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project (SSRLP) – Tidzidalire project, with financial support from the Multi-Donor Trust Fund through the World Bank, USAID, Iceland, Ireland, UK-FCDO, the European Union, and Norway.
