Government says it will enforce a ban on thin plastic bags by July 8th, 2024, following a Supreme Court decision to lift an injunction that had halted the ban since 2021.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Dr. Yusuf Mkungula, confirmed that the ban will be strictly enforced, and no one, including companies that have already manufactured large quantities of thin plastics, will be spared.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Mkungula said that the law will be enforced to completely stop the use of thin plastics in the country.
Dr. Robert Kafakoma, Chairperson of the Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), welcomed the development, stating that MEPA will work with stakeholders to create a clean and healthy environment for all.
According to Kafakoma the ban, which prohibits the manufacturing, distribution, sale, exportation, and importation of thin plastic bags less than 60 microns, aims to reduce plastic waste and promote a cleaner environment in Malawi.
