Government tells ICT sector to operate within law

Information and Digitalisation Minister Moses Kunkuyu has urged operators in the information communication and technology (ICT) sector to operate within the legal framework.

He, therefore, said claims that regulator, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra), is being tough on them do not hold water.

The minister said this in Blantyre Monday, when he presided over activities at Macra Open Week.

The week is aimed at providing operators and Macra with a platform for engagement.

“Operators are fully aware of the laws under which they work. As such, abiding by such laws is key to creating a vibrant ICT sector.

“The prosperity of the country hinges on the ability to embrace and adapt to the rapid pace of technological change,” Kunkuyu said.

He, therefore, said his ministry was investing in ICT infrastructure as well as promoting digital literacy and skills development.

“Recently, government secured a $150 million grant from the World Bank for the Digital Acceleration Project, which will boost Malawi’s digitalisation efforts and transform industry players’ participation in the digital economy,” Kunkuyu said.

On his part, Macra Board Chairperson Bridget Chibwana said the Open Week would help keep operators abreast of projects and innovations that their regulatory body is implementing.

“We will also take advantage of the interaction to allow prospective licencees to get an update on their requests to venture into ICT business,” she said.

Meanwhile, Macra Director General Daud Suleman has said several digital laws are to be enacted to ensure that the digital space is properly regulated.

Other Open Week events will also be held in Lilongwe and Mzuzu later this week.
