Gaming, gambling new tourism industry frontiers

By Jimmy Chazama:

Tourism Minister Vera Kamtukule has said gambling and gaming can be the new frontiers for attracting tourists.

She said another aspect of the tourism industry’s master plan is to develop places like Likoma Island, where hotels and casinos will be built to allow tourists to gamble while appreciating nature.

She made the remarks on Friday during the launch of MobiPay Television Games at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

“Gambling is a very big business across the world but we noted that we have not given this sector a lot of attention. Gambling and gaming are tourism products, just like Lake Malawi and Mulanje Mountain,” Kamtukule said.

She also urged people to promote responsible gambling.

MobiPay Chief Executive Officer Kondwani Mkandawire concurred with the minister.

“It is exciting news for us, as we develop games, that the ministry is embracing these games as entertainment and tourism products. MobiPay is not only developing gaming systems but also understands its role in responsible gaming,” Mkandawire said.

Mkandawire said in the past few months, over 5,000 winners won over K250 million.

The launch was also attended by representatives of media houses in Malawi.

The Times Group Limited Editor-in-Chief Pilirani Kachinziri described the partnership with MobiPay as crucial for both companies.

“On behalf of The Times Group Limited, I would like to express my gratitude to our partner, MobiPay. Indeed, they are our valued customers.

“MobiPay’s commitment to support businesses, especially during these challenging economic times, has truly elevated our endeavours. As the biggest and oldest private media institution in Malawi, innovation is key,” Kachinziri said.

Kachinziri also said the partnership had been instrumental in meeting business growth goals at The Times Group.
