Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said it will hold inaugural football awards in Blantyre on February 21.

The association made the announcement in a statement Thursday.

“The event will recognise outstanding performances for Malawian football players, coaches and referees across all elite competitions in both men’s and women’s categories in the 2024 season,” the statement reads.

This could be a step in the right direction as Fam has borrowed a leaf from other countries that organise one event at the end of the season.

Previously, every competition sponsor, in conjunction with Fam, had been honouring outstanding teams and individuals separately at the end of their respective tournaments.

According to Fam, the awards have been divided into three segments namely Castel Cup awards, FDH Bank Cup awards and Overall awards.

‘In the overall category, the men’s segment will feature awards for Young Player of the Year, Footballer of the Year, Best Coach and the Best XI,” the statement reads.

The women’s segment will include awards for the Best Footballer of the Year, Best Women’s Coach and the Best XI.

Additionally, a Presidential Meritorious award will be presented.

The association is expected to announce nominees for some categories next Wednesday.

The voting process will run from February 10 to 14.

Technical Study Group and selected football journalists will be responsible for selecting the outstanding individuals in the Castel Challenge Cup and FDH Bank Cup.

But Super League team captains, coaches and fans will vote for the overall awards.

Sports analyst Parry Chinyama said the arrangement would bring sanity to awards ceremonies.

“It is good that Fam has come up with such an arrangement. This is the way to go,” Chinyama said.

Fam made the resolution to introduce annual awards during its executive committee meeting held in Salima District early last year.
