“End stigma”- Stakeholders say on World Menstrual Hygiene Day

Malawi has joined the global community in observing World Menstrual Hygiene Day, emphasizing the need to break stigma and taboos surrounding menstruation.

The day, marked annually on May 28, aims to raise awareness about good menstrual hygiene and dispel social taboos.

This year’s theme is “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld#.”

The Ministry of Water and Sanitation has called for action to encourage open discussions about menstrual health, removing stigma and shame.

The ministry urges stakeholders to collaborate in creating a society where girls and women can experience their menstrual cycles with dignity.

Dorothy Ngoma, a safe motherhood expert, stresses that it’s time for Malawians to openly discuss menstruation without shame, recognizing it as a natural part of life.
