Ekhaya United get Thumbs Up for Super League

Ekhaya United have lifted the Southern Region Football Association League Thumbs Up Premier Division title with a 2-0 beating of Nyambadwe United in a match played at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre Thursday.

By winning the regional championship, Ekhaya have also qualified for the 2025 TNM Super League.

The Cowboys marched into the promised land with goals from Goodnews Mphande and Mwayi Banda to claim the title with one match to go.

The result saw Ekhaya cruise to an unassailable 31 points from 13 matches while second-placed Red Lions have 26 points from a similar number of assignments.

The Zomba-based soldiers can only get to 29 points if they win their last match.

Ekhaya coach Moses Chavula said they are overjoyed with qualifying for top flight football.

“I am a coach with no experience at all but management of Ekhaya FC entrusted me with taking charge of this team. I thank them for their confidence in my ability to deliver the title. We were up against teams that have been there for many years but we managed to beat them to the championship. So I should thank my players for a job well done,” Chavula said.

Ekhaya chairperson, William Mpinganjira, said they started the team in Chikwawa District as a social activity among people surrounding Ekhaya Farm.

“We managed to get the team into various competitions and we won them all. That is when my younger brother Mphatso suggested that we join Division One where we won the title in our first season. This was also our first season in the Premier Division and we never expected to lift the title. But thanks to all stakeholders for joining hands to ensure that we win the championship,” Mpinganjira said.

He said they have confidence in their younger players to succeed in top flight football and avoid relegation.
