As one way of addressing the problem of unavailability of harmonised locally published early childhood teaching and learning materials, Dzuka Publishing Company Limited, a subsidiary of The Times Group, has developed and published textbooks for Early Childhood Development (ECD).
The publisher is set to launch the textbooks today at Association of Early Childhood Development in Malawi offices in Blantyre.
Dzuka Publishing Company Limited Publishing Manager, Maureen Masamba, said the textbooks align with the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare’s ECD curriculum, covering mathematics (numeracy), English (literacy) and environment activities.
“The textbooks are categorised into three levels for those between the ages of three and six years. The textbooks provide a solid learning foundation for children, relevant knowledge befitting the local and international setting.
“In fact, they unlock children’s potential regardless of economic, social and cultural background and enable children from the rural setup to access quality education materials corresponding to their counterparts in the urban setup,” she said.
Masamba added that the textbooks have been packed with exercises and activities with clear and concise instructions, making it easy for children to grasp the content.
“They have colourful illustrations to keep children interested during the learning process.
Parents and guardians can easily use the textbooks to teach children at home,” Masamba said.
Masamba said the textbooks give every child an opportunity to dream and visualise their future despite their cultural, economic status or environmental setting.
“Children who will be using the textbooks will be able to listen and speak actively in diverse situations, express their feelings, ideas and opinions clearly and with confidence and also develop appropriate writing skills,” she said.
Since its establishment in 1975, Dzuka Publishing Company has been developing and publishing textbooks for primary and secondary schools.
The company is well known and remembered for publishing textbooks for Chichewa, namely Mtunda Series, for standards 1 to 8 and the English for Malawi series.
Currently, the company has a list of textbooks which are recommended and approved by the Ministry of Education for use in secondary schools in Malawi.
