The Democratic Progress Party (DPP) has expressed shock over the rejection of Lonnie Chijere Phiri, a Member of Parliament for Zomba Chingale, into the Parliamentary Service Commission.
DPP president Arthur Peter Mutharika had appointed Phiri to replace Dr. George Chaponda into the commission after Chaponda was appointed as the leader of the opposition.
However, disagreements arose after Phiri’s appointment was announced, leading to a vote in Parliament.
In the end, 32 MPs supported Phiri, while 75 voted against her appointment.
In an interview with MIJ FM, Dr. George Chaponda, the leader of the opposition, said he was surprised by Phiri’s rejection, especially since the business committee had assured him that everything was in order.
Meanwhile, Chaponda mentioned that the party is waiting for the government to explain the country’s Extended Credit Facility position in the current sitting of Parliament.
